As a young boy growing up in Kenya, my fascination with computers and the way they processed information sparked my curiosity and ignited a passion within me. Little did I know that this curiosity would lead me on a journey toward becoming a software developer. Today, at the age of 26, I am proud to say that I am living my dream as a software developer at Swifttdial Systems Limited. Let me take you through the ups and downs of my coding journey.

Back in 2013, after completing high school, I had a clear vision of becoming a software developer. During my high school days, I was always the first one to arrive at the computer lab, eager to explore the endless possibilities that computers offered. I developed a close relationship with my computer teacher, bombarding her with questions about how computers worked and seeking answers to satisfy my curiosity.

Following high school, I enrolled in a local college to pursue computer packages, a customary choice for many Kenyan high school graduates. Shortly after, I found myself working at the same college as a computer teacher, helping students navigate the world of technology. It was during this time that my desire to learn more grew exponentially. Although I knew I wanted to become a software developer, all I did initially was wear a hoodie and open the command prompt ๐Ÿ˜‚, which unfortunately led some people to label me as a hacker. This perception, however misguided, actually motivated me further.

In 2015, I joined a university to study computer science, but financial constraints forced me to drop out. Additionally, I faced the devastating loss of my guardian to breast cancer during this time. I found solace in working with my business partner, my friend, and a respected individual, Mr. Amos Kimani, at the newly established boutique shop. This experience not only taught me the value of hard work but also helped me overcome my shyness and express myself more confidently. I firmly believed that this opportunity was meant to shape me for something greater.

In 2019, my journey took an exciting turn when I was awarded a scholarship by Google Africa. The program, called ALC4 (Andela Learning Community), was a collaboration between Google Africa, Andela, and Pluralsight, aimed at empowering young Africans with coding skills. I chose the mobile web track and completed the program in November 2020. Little did I know that a global pandemic, COVID-19, would bring about a major turning point in my career.

With businesses being greatly affected by the pandemic, I saw it as the perfect time to transition from the business world to the IT industry. I applied for an internship in 2021 February position at Swifttdial Systems Limited, a startup company, as a mobile web developer. Over the course of six months, I immersed myself in the internship, honing my skills and gaining valuable experience. At the end of the internship, I was thrilled to be offered a full-time position as a software developer.

Working in a startup environment exposed me to various dimensions of the business. I found myself taking on roles such as a UI/UX designer, handling client relations, providing technical support, engaging in sales and marketing, and even delving into data analysis. This multidisciplinary experience broadened my skill set and allowed me to grow both personally and professionally.

Throughout my coding journey, I have encountered challenges and faced tough moments. However, I have learned to trust the process and embrace the difficulties as opportunities for growth. The path to becoming a software developer has not been easy, but the rewards have been immeasurable. I have had the privilege of interacting with people I never thought I would sit in the same room with, both locally and internationally.
